I don’t often get sentimental about these kinds of things but as CB and I prepare to spend our first Christmas together in the UK, I got to thinking about the festive time of year.
The ritual and traditions that Christmas is wrapped up in have always interested me. The adverts on prime time TV, overpriced mulled wine at the Christmas market, gratuitous mince pies, the work do. The second work do. The scandal from the work do. The Christmas dinner. Tinsel everywhere.
Every year, as Christmas gets closer, I always find myself wondering about people’s holiday habits. A couple of weeks ago, I read an article in the Guardian about the Christmas Day rituals of celebrities. For some, it was family, for others, friends, and others still, it was just them and their significant other. In all instances, people treasured their rituals. The food they share, the music they listen to, the TV they watch (and argue over). These things become the hallmark of Christmas.
For us, that means plenty of holiday food, plenty of mulled wine, and more tinsel than we know what to do with. Here’s to wishing you all a happy holiday, wherever you are and whatever you are planning to do.
Merry Christmas!
